CCA co-organised a webinar with the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB) on 16 June 2021. Nearly 200 members of the Institute attended this lunch hour event.
Entitled “Why Climate Change Matters so much to Banks and Bankers”, this webinar forms the basis of two forthcoming CDP/ certificate courses co-organised by CCA and HKIB in July and August 2021 — “Green Banking Essentials: Net Zero, Climate Risks & Opportunities” and “Sustainable Banking and Climate Emergency: Risks and Opportunities for Bankers”, respectively.
The webinar started with CCA Director Mr John Sayer sharing why climate change is an imminent issue and how East Asian countries responded by announcing net-zero targets. From different stakeholders’ perspective, including investor’s and lender’s, Mr Sayer gave an analysis on where the drivers for green finance will come from. He took the sharing further by showing reports which testify ESG investments are relatively more resilient during the Covid-19 pandemic. At the end of his sharing, Mr Sayer emphasized that there is no tradeoff between financial return and sustainability.
In the second part of the webinar, Ir Albert Lai, CEO of CCA, elaborated on a set of sustainable finance toolbox. This includes green bonds, green loans, sustainability-linked loans, green REITs and green indices. His recommendation to financial institutions was that they start with CAFÉ (Carbon Accounting for Financed Emissions) to understand the carbon emissions of their own operation and portfolio.
The webinar ended with a panel discussion during which participants raised questions and exchanged their views with the speakers.
