On 4 January 2019, U Magazine organised the 9^th U Green Awards prize presentation ceremony and green carnival at the Kwun Tong Promenade. With ‘turning waste into resources’ as this year’s theme, the organiser aimed to encourage the public to avoid the unnecessary generation of waste and transform reusable or recyclable ‘waste’ into useful resources.

As in previous years, Carbon Care Asia was invited to join the panel of adjudicators and attend the prize presentation ceremony as a guest presenter. This year, an “Outstanding Green Contributions Award” was included to commend the green undertakings of organisations in different sectors. Ms Chloe Mok, CCA Director of Sustainability Strategy, represented the company to serve as a member on the judging panel and presented part of the awards at the prize presentation ceremony held on 4^th January.

Ms Chloe Mok pointed out that “turning waste into resources” is only the last step of going green. Waste reduction at the source must not be ignored. As clear and strict reward-and-penalty structures and monitoring systems are usually stipulated in environmental protection mechanisms and legislations overseas, the Hong Kong government may wish to tighten up its own environmental rules and regulations. Meanwhile, corporations and product manufacturers should also play a key role. When they take environmental responsibilities seriously, the waste of resources can be reduced.
