Following the recent call by Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary to ‘seek boundless development’ and ‘foster economic growth’, this issue argues that development and growth can never be ‘boundless’ as we are bound by what scientists have long reminded us — the planetary boundaries which include our clearly finite supplies of air, fresh water, healthy oceans, minerals and fertile land. This edition examines the changing concepts of growth and development, as people and businesses begin to explore the possibility of embracing a new growth that emphasizes the wise and careful use of resources, natural balances and the pursuit of harmony.
